Hot tip! The new website of the American School of Classical Studes at Athens is expected to go live this week. It will be at the same place as the old one. I think you'll like it. There will be multiple RSS feeds, and it has much more visual impact than the old version. All of the features of the Belgen Blog are integrated in it, so I'm happy to report that as soon as it appears, this forum will cease to function.

Those of you who like to get this kind of information by e-mail will still have that option. I will post instructions here soon.

Blegen Library Head Librarian Chuck Jones has resigned from the American School of Classical Studies at Athens as of March 1st 2008. At that time he will take up the position of Head of the Library at the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World at New York University.

POSITION AVAILABLE HEAD LIBRARIAN OF THE BLEGEN LIBRARY

The American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA) invites applications and nominations for the position of Head Librarian of the Carl W. Blegen Library. The American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA) is one of the world's leading research and teaching institutions dedicated to the advanced study of all aspects of Greek culture, from antiquity to the present day. Founded in 1881, the ASCSA provides graduate students and scholars from some 180 affiliated North American colleges and universities a base for research and study in Greece. The ASCSA operates two major research libraries in Athens (The Blegen Library and the Gennadius Library), supports archaeological research and excavations in the ancient agora of Athens, in Corinth, and elsewhere in Greece, and disseminates information about its research through an active publications program.

The ASCSA is a primary resource for American and international graduate students and scholars in Hellenic studies, from antiquity to the present day. The Blegen Library is a non-circulating library dedicated to the entire field of classical antiquity, with special emphasis on the language, literature, art, history and archaeology of Greece, with 90,000 volumes, ca. 700 print periodical subscriptions, and ca. 200 electronic subscriptions. The Gennadius Library, with 113,000 volumes and extensive archives, is devoted to post-classical Hellenic civilization. Although both libraries serve primarily a constituency of North American students and scholars, there is a large group of international library users, including many Greek scholars.

Key responsibilities of the Head Librarian of the Blegen Library are as follows:
-Provides leadership for the Blegen Library. Position reports to the Director of the School in Athens;
- Manages the transition from a distributed model of information management to an integrated technical services unit serving both the Blegen and Gennadius Libraries;
-In collaboration with the Managing Committee, Trustees, and staff of the School monitors change, thinks strategically, and sets future directions for the Library, blending an appreciation of print materials and the traditions of the School with the electronic needs of a modern library;
-Provides leadership for creating and implementing an integrated collections development plan including digital materials, working in collaboration with the Director of the Gennadius Library, the Archivist, academic staff and committees of the School;
-Manages the library facility of approximately 1,735 sq. feet of stacks and office spaces and 2,800 m. of shelf space; manages the Library's operating budget of approximately $315,000 for FY2008 (exclusive of salaries); and supervises a library staff of four full time employees, two part time, and occasional volunteers;
-Oversees the collections of the library, including the acquisition, cataloging and indexing of print and electronic materials and the maintenance and preservation of library resources in both print and electronic formats;
-Provides guidance and instruction for students, faculty, and visiting scholars in the use of print and electronic materials in ancient Mediterranean philological, literary, historical, archaeological, and art historical research;
-Works with colleagues at related research libraries in Greece and abroad to develop and promote collaborative efforts. Works especially closely with the library of the British School at Athens in an electronic union catalogue and other shared initiatives;
-Advocates for the Library and assists in on-going fundraising efforts for Library, including the occasional writing of grant proposals;
-Oversees the Library's web presence and takes a leadership role in the continuing development of a centralized digital repository for ASCSA's electronic information resources.

Position requirements:
-ALA-accredited MLS or its equivalent;
-Strong, demonstrated managerial skills, with substantial experience in a library environment, including significant managerial experience;
-As a minimum, BA in classics or classical archaeology or related field; MA or PhD preferred. Expertise in one of the disciplines of the Blegen's collection (classics, prehistoric and/or classical archaeology, ancient history, history of ancient art); knowledge of relevant languages;
-Demonstrated skills and experience in relevant information technology, including its use and management, and possessing a comprehensive understanding of the technology-driven information environment, including institutional repository development;
-Understanding of unique needs of a graduate research library and familiarity with current issues in academic librarianship;
-Knowledge of best practices and current trends in managing academic libraries and serving library constituencies;
-Excellent communication, computer, organizational, and interpersonal skills;
-Specific experience working with Ex Libris' ALEPH highly desirable.

Collaborating to Improve Library Collections

Over at Current Epigraphy we're taking some steps to try to improve library holdings of epigraphic publications. We hope that we'll be joined there by other scholars and librarians, and mimic'd on other subfield blogs as well.

This was Gil Renberg's idea: a place to share notices of useful publications (print or electronic) that seem to have escaped the collections dragnet and are therefore dangerously (preservation) or disruptively (research support) underrepresented in a nation's or a region's libraries.

We're trying to use the blog medium to our advantage as well, so we're tagging relevant posts as concerned with "rare publications". This gives us a thematically browseable list, together with a corresponding web feed.

Calendar 2008

So far, calendars have been based on various inspirations. 2008 is the year devoted to libraries! Greece has a lot to present in this field as one will find browsing the desk calendar "Greek Libraries 2008", published by Ianos publications together with the Union of Greek Librarians & Information Scientists.
This is of high importance for the Blegen and Gennadius since it includes photographs of their reading rooms (Blegen image is taken from the archive --year: 1906).
The calendar also comprises images & concise presentation of various libraries, starting from the National Library of Greece and the Greek Parliament Library, to the very modern university libraries as well as some indicative public libraries.

The Ancient World Bloggers Group Blog [AWBG] debuted in early December 2006. It is "a place for posts and discussion about blogging the Ancient World. Particularly welcome are entries announcing real world events where bloggers can meet, planning and notice of virtual blogfests - when a group of bloggers are posting about the same topic, and other issues related to how bloggers go about their business. Since this is a meta-blog, the list of links below currently includes sites that are similarly introspective about using technology to study some part of the Ancient World."

Holiday absences

As the holiday season approaches, users of the Blegen Library are reminded that they are required to reshelve all the books they have checked out to their seat if they will be away for more than one week.

Quoting from the Blegen Library Rules:

Signing out books to tables and carrels: No book should ever be removed from a shelf unless a sign-out card is completely and legibly filled out and put in place of the book. Sign-out cards are available at the ends of the stacks. Cards already on the shelves must not be removed from their places.

Failure to check out books properly may result in forfeiture of library privileges.

Members may sign out up to 20 books at a time to a carrel or table. Books may be checked out from a member’s carrel for up to a day by placing a sign-out card in place of the book. Please return the book to the carrel the same day. Members are requested to keep their books upright between bookends to facilitate locating them on the desk. Members and staff are requested to reshelve their books if they will be away from the library for more than one week.

Your cooperation and adherence to these rules is essential to the smooth operation of the Library.

"In 2000 the International Committee of CVA asked the Beazley Archive to prepare a feasibility study for the digitisation of out of print fascicules, approximately 250 for the web. Later that year the Union Académique Internationale formally invited the Beazley Archive to undertake the project. In 2001 The Getty Grant Program awarded £75,000 for a three-year project to be carried out in Oxf ord.The CVA project, to digitise these fascicules began in 2002 and ended in September 2004. A new journal, Groma, volume 1 (2007) appears to have the full - and enhanced - text of its innaugual issue available online

"The main topics of the first number of the journal are:- the synthesis of the international workshops “L’Adriatico, un ponte d’acqua”, and “New Researches in Suothern Albania”, held in Acquaviva Picena; during the workshops were presented significant research projects in Marche region (central Italy), Croatia and in southern Albania (Phoinike, Butrint);- contributions about the on-field experiences of the Archaeological Survey Laboratory (Department of Archaeology, University of Bologna) held in Acquaviva Picena but also in other archaeological contexts where the same methods were successfully tested."

Scholarship in Google Books

A large number of important scholarly works are emerging from the Google Books digitization effort. Many of these are in satisfactory and readable states, others are not. Descriptive metadata is variable - from mediocre to poor, on the whole.

About eighty volumes published by the American School of Classical Studies at Athens are available at the moment in full view.

Scholars and librarians are working to document interesting setas of materuial published in Google Books. Mische Hooker of the University of Cincinnati, for example, is compiling a classified bibliography of BIBLE, JUDAISM, CHRISTIANITY via Google Book Search. The Patristics/ Early Christianity section is particularly rich, including much of Migne, Patrologia Graeca and Patrologia Latina; Corpus Scriptorum Historiae Byzantinae; and a broad selection of other materials.

"Following Pausanias: A Quest for Greek Antiquity is a study of Pausanias's ten-book travelogue Hellados Periegesis, which describes Greece as he experienced it in the second century. This multi-faceted academic analysis, sponsored by the National Hellenic Research Foundation and the American School of Classical Studies, considers the significant and long-term impact of this ancient source through its various translations and later editions. Twelve contributors focus on the political and cultural conditions that nurtured Pausaniass work, investigate his influence on the "revival" of Ancient Greece in the early modern era and examine how modern historians, archaeologists and art historians regard and evaluate Pausaniass work. Konstantinos Staikos, author of the History of the Library in Western Civilization series, provides an interesting chapter on the first printed edition of Periegesis, produced by Aldus Manutius in Venice in 1516. The volume is beautifully produced and illustrated, with color or black-and-white images on almost every page. The work concludes with a useful bibliography and index. Following Pausanias is an interesting and valuable resource regarding the influential work of Pausanias. As the academic year in North America comes to an end the busy season at the Blegen begins and we are working to accommodate the visits of summer members. It will be a great help to us if you can assist with the following:

1) Regular Members - If you plan to continue using the Blegen, please let us know which seat you are sitting at in the reading room, so we can assign the other seats at the members' tables to visiting members.
2) All Members - Please vacate the three large tables in the basement by the beginning of June to allow for the Summer Session students, who will all be assigned there.
3) All Members - If you have a seat assignment but have left for the summer, please let us know so we can re-assign your space.
4) All Members - If you use your assigned space infrequently, please let us know if you are willing to allow a visiting member to double up temporarily.

The journal coverage is worldwide in its scope: over half of the articles are on non-British topics, with a very strong concentration on European cities. It has recently developed a new publishing venture, hosting innovative multi-media websites - including graphics, sound and interactive elements - to accompany selected print articles.* The journal also includes book reviews, summaries of PhD theses, and surveys of recent articles in academic journals. In addition, Urban History acts as a forum for stimulating debate on historiographical and methodological issues. An indispensable tool for urban historians worldwide, the journal's annual bibliography features on average over 1000 publications culled from monographs, edited collections and periodicals.

ACLS History E-Book Project

As of this morning, the History E-Book Project of The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), is accessible from all facilities of the ASCSA, and (for members and staff) by way of the proxy server.

"Humanities E-Book is a digital collection offered by the ACLS in collaboration with ten learned societies, nearly 80 contributing publishers, and librarians at the University of Michigan’s Scholarly Publishing Office. The result is an online, fully searchable collection of high-quality books in the Humanities, recommended and reviewed by scholars and featuring unlimited multi-user access and free, downloadable MARC records. HEB is available 24/7 on- and off-campus through standard web browsers."

American School of Classical Studies at Athens is a contributing publisher in the project.

In the next few weeks we will be adding MARC records to Ambrosia for titles we do not already hold, and hyperlinks from the records we do already hold.

Update: March7, 2007 - It has been brought to my attention that not all of the new JSTOR journals were actually accessible from the ASCSA at the time I first posted this notice in early February - All of them are now available from within the ASCSA domain (i.e. The Blegen Library, the Gennadius Library, Loring Hall, the Agora Excavations offices, the Princeton office), and to members and staff while outside the domain, by way of the proxy server.

Thanks to an agreement negotiated by CAORC, readers at the American School of Classical Studies now have access to a much broader selection of online periodicals from JSTOR. You may browse an alphabetical list of accessible journals here.
